Rice is the second largest staple food crop in Pakistan and is a major export item in agricultural produces. Rice cultivation in Pakistan is irrigated on Two Million hectares of agriculture land in Sindh and Punjab Province in Pakistan. The major part of the rice production in the country consists of 55% irri varieties and 40% of basmati(aromatic) rice and 5% of other varieties being planted once a year during the months of May/June and harvested in September to November with maturity time of 4 to 5 months. Pakistan by virtue of its warm climate grows indica (long grain) rice with special cooking textures of starches amylase and amylopactin. Rice business in Pakistan is in the hands of private sector where about two million metric tons of rice is exported annually from a total production of about five million metric tons. |
